Malle London X DeBolex
Collaboration Backpack
It was one of those very good days in the Malle studio – when the phone rang and a very well renowned custom motorcycle builder from London had a proposition! Malle Founder Jonny hopped on his old BSA and rode down to their workshop to see what was going on.
A little background – deBolex have been making very cool and contemporary customs for a few years, with a global reputation for an innovative hand-crafted approach and simply good design sense. What really attracted us to their work, was their subtle combination of contemporary engineering paired with classic motorcycle aesthetics – for example on the Mk5 (which used an early 90’s Honda CB750 as the donor), it was the addition of small details like the stainless steel visor on the front lamp which was a common mod on British WWII motorcycles and the use of the heavy duty leather belt across the tank – which was a common feature on the Triton (Triumph/Norton hybrid) race bikes of the 1960’s. That contemporary approach to classic (timeless) design is what resonated with us and where we saw the obvious cross-over between Malle London and deBolex.
Jonny returned to the studio with an exciting idea for a limited edition Malle design – to launch in parallel with a new bike they’re working on. Because of the sporty and high-end nature of the deBolex customs, we selected our ‘John Tool Bag’ backpack/shoulder-bag hybrid as the Malle to base the limited edition on. This design piece is the perfect bag to ride with in the backpack position, but when you dismount you can turn the bag into a shoulder-bag, which is a little more gentlemanly, for when you head into the office.
With reference to the chrome and black of the motorcycle – we selected a luxurious 15oz Charcoal Grey waxed canvas fabric with a full grain matt black leather. The extremely durable non-residue waxed canvas has a unique feel that will develop a great patina with years of use. All of the hardware is solid welded brass and the 7 pocket interior is made from an organic cotton twill. A chic, yet hardwearing piece that is built to last.
