As the Thursday night Pre-Party of The Mile kicked off, someone asked “what’s the weather forecast boys?” We joked; “Don’t worry Sir, we’re going to have weather all weekend!” Little did we know then. What the motorcycle gods had in store for us at The Malle Mile this year.
From glorious sunshine and 28°C, with dust storms being kicked up by the first races and the first Scrambles across the grounds of Grimsthorpe Castle on opening day. We all thought this was rather pleasant. Saturday then welcomed in The Malle Monsoon, with some of the heaviest rain we’ve ever raced in, no sooner had the Monsoon arrived, it was gone! Another hot evening graced the festival and The Art Of Sprint race and the wonderful main stage bands. We awoke to more gorgeous sunshine on Sunday, only to get yet more driving rain, then more sunshine for The Derby, the final race of the weekend.
As the muddy racers (looking more like swamp monsters) made their way to the Awards Ceremony on Sunday night, heart rates and adrenaline levels were finally dropping for the first time at the festival. We all started to relax, applauding the racers, the winners, the Marshalls and all of the thousands of beautiful people who helped to make The Mile, but the motorcycle gods weren’t done with us yet! As we lifted the Dick Shepherd Triumph Trophy, a crack of lightning and a tornado whipped across the valley. 5 minutes later it was gone, the after party continued and the fun resumed!
I guess you can’t host ‘The British Inappropriate Motorcycle Race’ without expecting the most inappropriate British summer weather. But it’s a testament to the great energy and spirit of each and every guest, each racer and team member. No matter what the weather threw at us, we all threw ourselves into the races, the parties, the scrambles, the dance floors, the music and The Mile festival experience with such gusto all weekend. And this is why we host The Malle Mile each year, to bring the wild, the crazy and the beautiful Malle Mile community together, for just one weekend a year, where we aim to host the greatest motorcycle race and motorcycle festival in the known universe.
Long may it continue, thank you from the bottom of our dusty, muddy, wet and sweaty hearts. The Mile is yours!
With Love, Godspeed.
